Wayne Strader was born to play football.
Born in Summersville, West Virginia, the delivery room doctor commented that the little guy would be a football player one day. That doc did not know how right he would be!
At Geneseo High School in Geneseo, Illinois, Wayne was an All-American running back and a two-time all-state selection. In 1976, he and his teammates won the IHSA Class 3A State Championship, the first official state title in Geneseo history.
Wayne played for legendary coach Bob Reade, a member of both the IHSA Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame. Coach Reade won 3 state titles at Geneseo and 4 consecutive Division III National Titles while at Augustana in Rock Island, Illinois.
As a hot high school recruit, Wayne had his choice of many schools, but he decided to be loyal to his home state and play at the University of Illinois. Wayne had hoped that Gary Moeller would do what Bo Schembechler did at Michigan when Mo left Michigan to become the Illini head coach in 1976. Wayne was a four-year lettermen at Illinois, leading to a free agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys in 1981.
A Big Ten guy his entire life, Wayne has raised a whole family of avid football fans. His daughter attends college at the University of Iowa and his stepson and daughter-in-law are official members of the RIVALS Flag Road Crew (as are their three children).
Best friend, assistant head coach and wife Carol, is also a football fan. Most Autumn Saturdays, the entire RIVALS Flag Road Crew, along with family or friends, can be found either in a stadium or glued to a television enjoying the great American game of college football. |
